An efficient, affordable, panelized build starts with a design that has panels in mind. In this blog, we’ll explore this prairie build and what made it an affordable abode.
Size Matters
Although lumber and exterior sheathing have come down since the pandemic, lumber is pricier than ten years ago. The random length 2×4 of yesteryear was approximately $0.30 per linear foot. By comparison, today’s random length of 2×4 is about $0.45 per linear foot. That’s 50% more than ten years ago when cumulative inflation was just under 33% over the same period. At 1200 square feet, this build is adequate and comfortable but designed with efficiency and cost in mind.
Think Like A Box
The “secret” in efficient wall panel manufacturing is that we love boxes. Boxes make for square walls, and square walls make for fast framing, which saves money in labor. The less complex the wall, the faster it runs down the line and the easier it is to bundle for shipping. Note the roof on this build. Do you think it was panelized?
Choose Your Materials Wisely
The building can be enveloped on-site with traditional house wrap. In this case, the “house wrap” was already in place using Huber Engineered Wood’s Zip System™. The Zip System is structural exterior panels with a patented weather-resistant coating that are fastened and seam-taped to ensure protection from all the weather elements.
The owner of this build went one step further, utilizing ZIP R-Sheathing, which adds rigid foam insulation to the standard ZIP Sheathing product – giving this house that extra push for energy efficiency!
Marvin Windows were chosen for their quality, durability, and aesthetics. They offer a view like no other from the inside and the outside!
