The Bundling of Wall Panels

The bundling of wall panels is more art than one realizes. When bundles arrive on the site, we want our framing partners to jump for joy rather than frown with disappointment. Many measures are in place to ensure our framers stay happy.

Safety

Each bundle is packaged to withstand material handling equipment, transportation, and hoisting at the job site.  Not only is strapping used to hold the bundled wall panels together, but boards are nailed to the sides of the bundles, as an additional security measure.

Organization

Not only are the panels organized according to location on the site and the installation sequence but stored in the yard according to the shipping schedule. This helps keep jobsites organized and speeds up the erection process.

Handling

Space is left in each bundle, to accommodate the forks of material handling equipment. This also creates room for straps on hoisting equipment. On taller, heavier, walls, additional safety measures come in the form of straps fastened underneath the top plates or hardware that is mounted through the plates to a stud.  Simpson Strong-Tie’s Panel Hoist Clips™ are a good example of this.

Storage

We like to be ahead of the framers to ensure timely delivery of the wall panels. But, not too far ahead. Wood, being what it is, is susceptible to the elements and can weather accordingly. If bundles are left out too long, wood can twist and nails can actually start to “pop”. Although some sheathing is weather-resistant to protect the bundles, bundles stored for longer durations should be protected with lumber tarps from moisture and sunlight.
